Safe and stable! QC gov’t asks DENR to reopen Payatas Sanitary Landfill

The Quezon City government requested to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to reopen the Payatas Sanitary Landfill, saying it is now “safe and stable.”

Mayor Herbert M. Bautista with QC EPWMD head Frederika Rentoy earlier met with DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu to discuss the matter.

“They presented the QC Government request for the re-opening of the Payatas Sanitary Landfill as this is now considered safe and stable,” the QC government said.

Bautista and Rentoy also said that engineering interventions made these past years in the landfill have been effective and compliant with international standards.

The order of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to close the Payatas Sanitary Landfill due to heavy rains resulted in garbage collection backlog in the city.

The city said that it is preparing for the gradual phase out of the landfill by the end of the year.
