Metro Manila shake drill successful, MMDA says
The yearly exercise Metro Manila earthquake drill has been successful in its objective in raising public awareness on the 7.2 magnitude quake that might hit the metropolis.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Danilo Lim issued the statement during the post assessment and evaluation meeting at the MMDA main office on Monday.
The MMDA chair underscored the actions of the many of the participants, particularly the four quadrant commanders who improvised to establish a continuous communication with responders of the local government personnel.
“Kahit papaano, nagkaroon kayo ng contact na hindi naman nangyari nung previous drills,” Lim told the MMDA personnel, and representatives of local disaster responders and national government agencies.
The MMDA chief also said it is vital to have a regular earthquake drill to be better prepared in the event that the so-called “Big One” jolts Metro Manila, defending the schedule of the four-day holding of the exercise.
“There were many criticisms why it was held during a pay day Friday, on top of a mall-wide sale. Tandaan natin, walang pinipiling panahon at lugar ang mga ganitong mga pangyayari kaya dapat prepared tayo sa worst case scenario, Lim said.
“Ang mga ito (the holding of sale and heavy downpour) ay nakadagdag to the realism and challenge,” added.
