Hindi ako abugadong nagpapaikot ng batas! Alejano proud of military roots
So what if I’m not a lawyer?
Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano on Monday (May 15) shrugged off the criticism of some of his colleagues that his lack of knowledge in law made him file an impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte that is insufficient in substance.
In a press conference after the House justice committee unanimously voted to junk his impeachment complaint, an emotional Alejano acknowledged he just used to be a soldier.
“Yes, hindi ako abogado. Hindi ako abogado na magaling na magpaikot-ikot sa batas. Ako ay dating sundalo. Ang alam ko lamang ay kung paano i-defend ang bansang ito,” he said.
During the hearing, Alejano was grilled by Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas on whether he had personal knowledge that Duterte was allegedly involved in the killing of drug suspects, and had amassed ill gotten wealth.
When Alejano replied that he based the complaint on testimonies of self-confessed hitmen and news reports, among others,Fariñas said he would be wasting the panel’s time if the allegations he made in the impeachment complaint were not based on his personal knowledge.
Alejano, however, insisted he was not given a chance to explain the bases of his impeachment complaint against Duterte.
If there’s any lesson the lawmaker learned from attempting to impeach Duterte, it’s that the House is not an independent institution.
“Nagpapakita lamang na hindi independent ‘yung House… I want to believe na mayroong integrity ang institution na ito. Pero nakikita natin paulit-ulit na hindi na ito independent,” he said.
