Mahusay! Castelo gushes over Duterte’s strategy with China
A former senior Liberal Party (LP) member-turned-PDP-Laban stalwart described President Rodrigo Duterte’s friendly disposition toward China as political genius.
According to a statement Sunday (May 14) by Quezon City 2nd district Rep. Winnie Castelo, Duterte’s decision to ditch the Philippines’s “confrontational approach” toward the regional giant smacks of “sharp political instinct.”
Duterte, it can be recalled, has avoided bringing up the July 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling that favors the Philippines during his negotiations with Chinese leader, President Xi Jinping. Instead, Digong has focused on economics talks.
China has practically ignored the PCA case, which was pursued during the administration of former president Benigno Aquino III.
Castelo, who joined the PDP-Laban fold last week, said the Filipino president did so in order to “win back the trust of the Asian economic power. ”
Duterte is expected to keep treading this path in a likely one-on-one with Xi at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.
“The President needs all the support he can muster from Filipinos in providing the groundwork for a beneficial and long-term cooperation with its neighbor China and a united political front to back his efforts,” Castelo said.
Before winning the presidency in May 2016, Duterte was Davao City mayor for 20 years.
