Ligawan sa Senado: Groups map out plans to sway senators vs DP
While lawmakers take a Holy Week break, groups allied with the Catholic Church are mapping out ways to sway senators into voting against the death penalty bill.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said the strategies range from talking to senators individually to lobbying against the passage of the measure.
“We might be able to get some of them… We just need to talk and appeal to them,” said Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care.
The bill had gained the nod of the House of Representatives in an overwhelming 216-24 vote.
According to the CBCP, the Free Legal Assistance Group of the Philippines’ Anti-Death Penalty Task Force listed at least eight senators who will oppose the bill, and 10 whose positions are still unknown.
