Erap gives stern message to new MPD anti-drug unit

The newly-created anti-drug unit of the Manila Police District (MPD) will undergo a refresher course on anti-drug laws and human rights, Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada said on Tuesday (March 7).

Estrada issued the directive after Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa announced that the national police will relaunch its anti-drug drive “Oplan Double Barrel Reloaded” after a month-long suspension.

“You’ve been called ‘Manila’s Finest’ for nothing. Do your duties well but preserve your honor and dignity by respecting human rights and the laws you took an oath to uphold,” the Manila mayor told the members of the MPD’s District Drug Enforcement Units (DDEU).

Estrada warned he will personally discipline any MPD member who will be engaged in illegal activities such as the “Tokhang-for-ransom” scheme.

“I will see to it that you will regret everything you have done,” said the mayor and former president.

MPD director Chief Supt. Joel Coronel said Estrada ordered him to subject all members of the MPD-DDEU to an orientation seminar to be handled by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), Office of the City Prosecutor of Manila, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

“They will be undergoing a two-day course on implementation of the anti-drug laws, with emphasis to be given on observance of the rules of procedure, human rights, and the rules of court,” Coronel said.#
