Erap cool with pro-Duterte vigil at Luneta
Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada has directed Manila Police District (MPD) to field a sufficient number of security forces at the Luneta Park where 200,000 pro-Duterte supporters are set to stage on Saturday (February 25) a prayer vigil and concert in support of President Duterte’s campaign against drugs and corruption.
Estrada said he sees no reason not to allow the gathering of pro-Duterte groups since it is merely a simple and non-political prayer vigil and concert–a peaceful public outpouring of support for the sitting President.
“I have ordered the Manila Police District (MPD) to maintain peace and order during the gathering and make sure motorists, pedestrians, and commuters will not be inconvenienced,” the Manila mayor, who has been supportive of the anti-drug campaign of Duterte, said.
As of this morning, Bureau of Permits director Fortune Mayuga said they are now processing the organizers’ application for a rally permit. “We are just awaiting the traffic management and security plans from the MPD and the rally organizers.”
MPD Director Chief Supt. Joel Coronel said he will deploy around 400 to 500 men in and around the Luneta Park area during the event.
“We will provide area and perimeter security, and we will also coordinate with the organizers for crowd control and traffic management,” Coronel said.
“I understand na nag-apply na sila for permit ng rally sa Office of the Mayor to hold the activity this weekend, and Mayor Estrada acted on it favorably.”#
